MMed Programme
MMed Programme Content:
Each programme includes three parts: coursework, exams, and a research-based dissertation. Trainees must successfully complete all these components to earn an MMed degree from UB and obtain registration as a specialist with the Botswana Health Professions Council (BHPC).
Requirements:
The programmes are open to citizens of Botswana and non-citizens. Applicants should have completed medical training at a BHPC-recognized medical school and have been actively practicing medicine for at least two years by December 31, 2025, with at least one year in an approved internship programme. Successful completion of Part I (primary) examinations of the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa (CMSA) before beginning studies will be an added advantage.
Transfers:
Any citizen of Botswana who began postgraduate training elsewhere and has not been able to complete the programme but still wishes to continue their studies may be eligible to transfer into these UB programmes in accordance with UB’s regulations on recognition of prior learning.
The Positions:
MMed training will be conducted full-time at MOH facilities; some programmes might also include training at private clinical sites locally and regionally.
Financial Sponsorship:
All MMed programmes are offered on a full-time basis, and as such, students will need financial support. Applicants will be required to provide letters of undertaking from their employers or prospective sponsors stating that, if selected for enrolment at UB, they will be released on study leave and supported throughout their studies. Failure to provide evidence of the employer’s commitment to support the candidate may disqualify the candidate from further consideration for selection. For candidates who are self-funded, UB Financial regulations on payment plans towards tuition fees shall apply.
Application Procedures:
All applications should be submitted online through the University of Botswana website: www.ub.bw > Study > Graduate > How to Apply for Admission . Applicants should upload their CVs and letters of commitment from their employers using any of the available file upload sections on the Documentation page of their Post Graduate Application.
BEFORE APPLYING
Make sure the following documents are readily available:
- Copy of the application fee receipt (payment can be made through the UB website. At the top right corner, you will see “UB Payment"; click there).
- Certified copies of Degree Certificate (s)
- Certified copies of qualifications and degrees, as well as official transcripts
- Three recent and signed letters of reference
- Certified copy of National Identity Card (Omang for citizens) or Passport for international applicants
- A statement of approximately 500 words indicating why the applicant is seeking postgraduate training.
- An up-to-date curriculum vitae listing education, work experience, and relevant personal information, including active e-mail addresses and mobile telephone numbers.
- Copy of proof of change of surname (where applicable) N.B. All former UB students who have changed their surnames should use the surnames they used while they were students at UB so that the system can easily match their student IDs with their surnames and old academic records. The new surnames will be captured through the Faculty Graduate Studies and Research office once the applicant has been admitted.
Selection:
Shortlisted applicants will be invited to interviews, which will be oral but may include a written or practical component in some programmes. The final evaluation will be based on 30% experience, 30% academic qualifications, and 40% interview. Successful candidates will be notified by Friday, 9th January, 2026, and should be available to begin training on Monday, 9th
February, 2026. Please note that candidates who were selected for enrolment in January 2025 and had their enrolment deferred do not need to reapply, as the offers still stand. If they are still interested in attending UB, they should confirm with their employer(s) regarding the status of their application for study leave. Their admission to UB will be confirmed upon submission of proof that study leave has been granted.
Application Deadline:
All applications should be received by 16th Tuesday, December 2025.
