SENIOR LECTURER/LECTURER IN INTERNAL MEDICINE, WITH SUBSPECIALITY TRAINING (FULL-TIME EQUIVALENT)

The Faculty of Medicine invites applications from suitably qualified persons for the position of Senior Lecturer/Lecturer in Internal Medicine.

The candidate will deliver an agreed proportion (%) of full-time duties.  The proportion (%) will be determined from the average number of hours of work per week during which the candidate will be available to carry out clinical duties and teaching (at a time and site to be mutually agreed upon between the candidate and the University).  The candidate may still hold another post at a different practice/institution while serving in the full-time equivalent post at the University of Botswana.

Duties: The successful candidate will be expected to (i) provide clinical teaching for post-graduate and undergraduate medical students; (ii) provide clinically relevant expertise to contribute to the development and supervision of student’s projects; (iii) initiate (where desirable), promote or participate in research as a clinical expert; (iv) participate in all academic and professional activities of the University as may be deemed necessary to promote excellence in clinical teaching; (iv) continue activities that promote the image of the university in promoting positive health impact across various communities in Botswana; (vi) and carry out any other duties as may be assigned by the Head of Department.

Requirements:

Senior Lecturer: Applicants should have: (i) at least a Master of Medicine (MMed) in Internal Medicine or equivalent PLUS evidence of subspecialty, preferably Hematology, Gastro-Enterology or Rheumatology; (ii) a Bachelor’s Degree in Medicine (MBBS, MBChB, MD or equivalent qualification) from a recognised institution; (iii) the qualification must be registered with or registrable by the Botswana Health professions Council with a specialist status; (iv) at least 3 years relevant teaching experience at a university or comparable institution; or 1 year of sustained mentorship/practice related training would be considered as an alternative; (v) an excellent cumulative and sustained record of research and publications with at least 6 pieces of research products published by recognised publishers, 4 of which must be articles in refereed/accredited journals in internationally recognised indexing databases OR evidence of clinical excellence or engagement, patient/community satisfaction. The remaining 2 publications could be journal articles, book chapters, peer reviewed conference proceedings etc published by recognized publishers. An academic book may be equivalent to a maximum of 4 articles in refereed/accredited journals, depending on the quality and standing of the publisher; (vi) evidence of community/clinical outreach for specialised referrals; (vii) sustained research output: a minimum of 1 peer reviewed publication or new clinical excellence output every 2 years; (viii) scholarly presentations at national and/or international conferences; (ix) lead and/or single author in at least 2 refereed journal articles; (ix) publications should be spread nationally and/or internationally and across journals; (x) some research impact, including but not limited to citations, the h-index, patents, policy applications, peer reviews, publications that are prescribed texts in other institutions etc. (required in at least 1 of the these); (xi) recognised as being of at least national research standing (e.g. reviewer for refereed/accredited national and regional publishers; Editorial board member of at least a national publisher in a relevant field; invitation as key note speaker at national and/or international conferences (required in at least 1 of the these) and (xii) evidence of governance and social engagement.  The following will be added advantages: (i) sustained research activity: on-going internally and/or externally supported research; (ii) research awards and other forms of research recognition, where appropriate; (iii) examiner/ moderator/assessor for undergraduate and/or postgraduate projects nationally and (iv) effective and experience in running a programme/course, etc.

The curriculum vitae should contain a detailed list of published works, clearly specifying titles of publications, ISBN numbers (for books, book chapters and conference proceedings), dates of publications, names of publishers, name/s of co-authors if any and number of pages. The works should be categorized into books, book chapters, refereed journals, non-refereed works, consultancies and practical media projects.

 

Lecturer: Applicants should have: (i) at least a Master of Medicine (MMed) in Internal Medicine or equivalent PLUS evidence of subspecialty, preferably Hematology, Gastro-Enterology or Rheumatology; (ii) a Bachelor’s Degree in Medicine (MBBS, MBChB, MD or equivalent qualification) from a recognised institution; (iii) the qualification must be registered with or registrable by the Botswana Health professions Council with a specialist status; (iv) show evidence of engagement in research. Evidence of governance and social engagement in Hospitality or related field, as well as teaching experience at a University or comparable institution will be added advantages.
