HEAD OF DEPARTMENT (CONTRACT POSITION)

VACANCY NO: FM/DEM01/2022

The University of Botswana (www.ub.bw ) is the largest and most prestigious institution of higher learning in the country. It has opened the country’s first Faculty of Medicine and is affiliated to an adjacent new state-of-art 450-bed, the Sir Ketumile Masire Teaching Hospital. The first MBBS undergraduate intake was in August 2009. Undergraduate medical training is by a Problem Based Learning [PBL] Hybrid approach, which is integrated and community oriented. The Faculty of Medicine runs a number of Masters of Medicine (MMed) (residency) programmes, including Emergency Medicine and Psychiatry.

Duties: the successful candidates will be expected to: (i)provide overall leadership and coordination of the department for efficient implementation of quality teaching and learning, research, and patient care; (ii) ensure successful delivery of the department’s mandate through effective budgeting and prudent resource management; (iii) to develop and manage the departmental human capital; (iv) work closely with the Ministry of Health and Wellness to facilitate the country to meet the sustainable development goals in their area of specialty; (v) create and maintain a high performance and ethical culture; (vi) effectively contribute to the faculty and institutional strategic goals;  (vii) participate in the faculty’s management processes including staff recruitment, assessment and promotion, students’ assessment, and research management; (viii) perform any other duty as may be assigned by the Dean and; (ix) act for the Deputy Deans/Dean as may be required; (x) participate in institutional activities as the need may rise from time to time.

Heads of Department report to the Dean, Faculty of Medicine

Qualification and Experience: (i) an undergraduate medical degree and a specialist qualification in Emergency Medicine with a minimum of 6 years of post-specialization professional practice in as an Emergency Physician. The qualification must be registerable by the Botswana Health Professions Council with a specialist status; (ii) must have attained the academic rank of senior lecturer or higher in the preceding 12 months prior to appointment; (iii) 1 year of distinctive record of leadership and administration of university level institution or Head of Department is desirable

Attributes and skills required; (i) excellent communication and organizational skills; (ii) strong academic leadership skills and sympathy for the values and culture of the University; (iii) good management, human relations, sound analytical and coordinating skills; (iv) clinical excellence

Duration of the contracts:  the above positions are available for restricted term contracts of three years and maybe renewed for a further term of three years on the basis of satisfactory performance.
