ASSISTANT PROGRAMME DIRECTOR (3-YEAR CONTRACT)

The University of Botswana (www.ub.bw) is the largest and most prestigious institution of higher learning in the country. It has opened the country’s first Faculty of Medicine and is affiliated to an adjacent new state-of-art 450-bed, the Sir Ketumile Masire Teaching Hospital. The first MBBS undergraduate intake was in August 2009. Undergraduate medical training is by a Problem Based Learning [PBL] Hybrid approach, which is integrated and community oriented. A number of Masters of Medicine (MMed) programmes are active.

Duties: the successful applicant will be required to; (i) assist the Head of the Department (HOD) in implementing the education of undergraduate and postgraduate students in teaching hospital; (ii) provide clinical service and teaching in the area of specialty;  (iii) assist the HOD in academic staff recruitment; (iv) work with the Deputy Dean of Research & Graduate Studies of the Faculty of Medicine, HOD, hospital (Ministry of Health) staff, and Hospital Superintendent to set priorities in education, recruitment and infrastructure enhancement; (v) assist the HOD to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of academic programmes; (vi) act for the HOD as may be required;  (vii) perform any other duties as may be assigned by the HOD.

Requirements: the successful applicant should have; (i) a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery or other recognised medical qualification (MD); (ii) a specialist qualification in Anaesthesia and Critical Care with a minimum of 5 years of post-specialisation experience in professional practice in Anaesthesia and Critical Care.  The qualification must be registered with or registerable by the Botswana Health Professions Council with a specialist status; (iii) must have significant experience organising training for Registrars/Residents in Anaesthesia and Critical Care; (iv) must have been a Lecturer (preferably Senior Lecturer) in the preceding 12 months prior to appointment; (iv) at least 1 year of distinctive record of leadership and administration of university level institution.

Attributes and skills required: (i) excellent communication and organisational skills; (ii) strong academic leadership skills and sympathy for the values and culture of the University; (iii) good management, human relations, sound analytical and coordinating skills. 

Duration of the contract: the above position is available for a restricted-term contract of three years and may be renewed for a further term of three years on the basis of satisfactory performance.

The curriculum vitae (CV) should contain a detailed list of the publications; clearly specifying titles of publications, dates published, name(s) of publishers and name(s) of co-authors if any. Publications should be categorised into: books, book chapters, monographs, refereed and non-refereed journals, etc.
