MPhil/PhD Degrees in Physics

Entrance Requirements

Master of Philosophy Degree (MPhil) in Physics Programme

  1. In order to register for the MPhil Degree, a candidate must discuss the proposed programme with the Department of Physics and then submit with the application form an acceptable outline of the intended research, in addition to satisfying Regulation 50.1.
  2. A candidate may be required to undergo a Departmental assessment and evaluation in order to determine whether or not he/she is adequately qualified to undertake the MPhil programme of study. On the basis of this assessment and evaluation, the Departmental Board shall make a recommendation whether a candidate is admissible or not admissible into the MPhil programme in Physics.

PhD Programme

To register for a PhD Degree, a candidate must have obtained an appropriate Degree (MSc or MPhil), in accordance with regulation 50.2.

Submission of Applications for Admissions

The procedure for submitting applications for admission to the MPhil and PhD programmes shall be as stipulated in General Regulations 50.1 and 50.2 respectively.

Registration

The procedure for registration for the MPhil and PhD degree programmes shall be as prescribed in General Regulation 50.3.

The Programme

The MPhil and PhD Programme in physics consist of two courses:

PHY 800:  Supervised Research and Thesis in Physics (MPhil)

PHY 900:  Supervised Research and Thesis in Physics (PhD)

Duration of the Programme

The duration of the MPhil and PhD programmes shall be as stipulated in General Regulation 50.4.

Programme of Study

The programme of study shall be as specified in the general regulations 50.5.

Transfer of Registration

Transfers of registration from MPhil to PhD and from PhD to MPhil shall be permitted in accordance with the provisions of General Regulations 50.6.2 and 50.6.3, respectively.

Thesis

Theses shall be submitted in accordance with the provisions of General Regulations 50.7.

Examinations

Examinations shall be conducted in accordance with the provisions of General Regulations 50.7.3.

Notification of Results and Award of Degree

The notification of results and award of degree shall be in accordance with General Regulation 50.9.
