The mid-semester break at the University of Botswana (UB) is more than just a pause from lectures and assignments. It has become a celebration of wellness, camaraderie and balance. Organised by the Student Representative Council (SRC) and the Graduate Students Association (GSA), the past weekend Kgale Hill Challenge brought students together for an unforgettable climb that blended fitness, friendship, and fun.
University life is demanding and wellness often takes a back seat to deadlines and exams. The Kgale Hill Challenge highlighted the importance of balance, showing that physical activity, relaxation and social connection are vital to academic success. By investing in both mind and body, students cultivate resilience, focus and a healthier approach to their studies.
Kgale Hill, with its steep trails and rugged terrain, is no small challenge. Yet the climb became a symbol of unity. Students encouraged one another, shared water bottles and offered support when the path grew tough. The journey becomes more than a hike. It is a lesson in community, resilience and shared achievement.
Beyond the physical effort, the hike offered a refreshing escape from academic pressures. Surrounded by the tranquility of nature, conversations flowed freely, laughter echoed along the trail and new friendships blossomed. At the summit, overlooking the breathtaking Gaborone Dam, students experienced not only the beauty of the view but also the deep satisfaction of achievement.
Not everyone reached the top and that is perfectly fine. The joy was in the journey, the laughter and the shared moments. For those who could not join, the snapshots of smiling faces against the backdrop of Kgale’s slopes will tell the story: UB students know how to climb higher, together.
