The University of Botswana (UB) today marked another significant milestone in its community outreach efforts and commitment to advancing education and national development by supporting the groundbreaking ceremony for the Lefoko Village Smart Library.

The ceremony was officiated by the Minister of Local Government and Traditional Affairs, Hon Ketlhalefile Motshegwa while UB Chancellor, Ms Tebelelo Mazile Seretse and Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor Teaching and Learning, Professor Maria Nnyepi, attended the event.

The smart library is being developed by Land Cruiser Club Botswana in partnership with the Government of Botswana, UB, FSG Limited and other stakeholders. The project aims to improve access to knowledge, promote literacy and create opportunities for learning by providing a modern facility that will benefit learners and the wider community.

As part of its contribution, the University has donated a selection of books and four (4) wooden display shelves to help establish the library's collection. The donation reflects UB's commitment to community engagement, lifelong learning and expanding access to educational resources in underserved communities.

In appreciation of the University's support, the Executive Committee of Land Cruiser Club Botswana thanked UB for its generous contribution, describing it as a significant investment in promoting literacy and empowering the people of Lefoko Village and surrounding communities. The Club also welcomed the opportunity for its representatives to visit the University Library to identify books that best met the needs of the intended beneficiaries before collecting the donated materials.

Providing an overview of the project, Land Cruiser Club Botswana Founder and President, Mr Thapelo Olopeng, said the facility, estimated to cost P1.2 million, would redefine the concept of a traditional village library.

"Today, we are breaking ground for a facility that will cost approximately P1.2 million. Given the current environment, this will not be a traditional library; it will be a smart library," he said.

Once completed, the Lefoko Village Smart Library is expected to serve as a centre for learning, innovation and digital inclusion.
