University of Botswana Strengthens Digital Teaching Through eLearning Training for Academic Staff

MabalaneThe Centre for Academic Development (CAD) at the University of Botswana, through its Educational Technology Unit (EduTech), successfully conducted an eLearning capacity-building workshop series for academic staff, culminating in a certificate presentation ceremony held on 12 March 2026.The training initiative forms part of the University’s ongoing efforts to strengthen technology-enhanced teaching and learning and to support academic staff in effectively integrating digital technologies into their pedagogical practices. The workshop series covered key areas including teaching in technology-enhanced classrooms, instructional design for eLearning, multimedia for eLearning, course implementation in Moodle Learning Management System (LMS), and academic integrity and ethics.

During the programme, participants engaged in practical sessions that enabled them to design and implement digital learning environments, develop multimedia-supported instructional materials, strengthen ethical practices related to academic integrity and plagiarism detection, and improve their use of classroom and online teaching technologies. The workshops were facilitated by members of the Educational Technology Unit, with Dr. Dennis K. Mabalane, Acting Deputy Director and Instructional Designer, facilitating sessions on Instructional Design for eLearning, Course Implementation in Moodle LMS: Setting Up a Course, and Academic Integrity and Ethics. Other facilitators included Mr. T. Tladi, who facilitated Teaching in Technology-Enhanced Classrooms, and Mr. B. Mabophiwa, who facilitated Multimedia for eLearning. In addition, Mr. Gaedupe, an Educational Technology Unit intern, demonstrated practical approaches to online assessment and digital evaluation methods, providing participants with hands-on guidance on implementing assessments within the Moodle learning environment.

SeruThe training programme was conducted under the Centre for Academic Development, led by its Director, Dr. Seru, and forms part of the Centre’s broader mandate to support innovative teaching and learning practices at the University of Botswana. The programme concluded with the presentation of certificates of completion to participating academic staff, recognising their commitment to enhancing their digital teaching competencies and contributing to technology-supported learning at the University. The Centre for Academic Development congratulates all participants and looks forward to continuing to support academic staff through professional development initiatives that strengthen the integration of educational technologies across the University.
