The University of Botswana (UB) Social Work Society hosted an induction ceremony for first-year Social Work students on the 27th of August 2026 at the Student Centre under the theme, “Igniting Hope, Becoming Agents of Change.”
The ceremony marked an important milestone in welcoming the new cohort of students into the Social Work profession and introducing them to the values, responsibilities and expectations that come with studying and practising social work.
The event provided an opportunity for first-year students to interact with fellow students, society members, lecturers and other invited guests while gaining a deeper understanding of the role they are expected to play in promoting social justice, empowering vulnerable individuals and communities as well as contributing to positive social transformation.
Throughout the ceremony, emphasis was placed on the importance of hope, compassion, resilience, ethical practice and commitment to service as essential qualities of an effective social worker.
The induction further served as a platform for students to appreciate the history and purpose of the Social Work Society and the opportunities it provides for professional growth, peer support, networking, leadership development and community involvement.
Students were encouraged to make use of the knowledge and skills gained throughout their studies to challenge social inequalities, advocate for the rights of vulnerable populations, and become responsible citizens who contribute positively to society.
