University of Botswana Shines at BOTESSA 2025, Clinches 24 Medals

BOTESSAUniversity of Botswana (UB) Athletics Club delivered a stellar performance at the BOTESSA Championship 2025, clinching 24 medals and reaffirming its dominance in university athletics. The team, made up of 25 athletes, walked away with nine (9) gold, seven (7) silver and bronze medals, respectively despite the absence of their Senior Head Coach, Justice Dipeba, who was on national duty at the World Relays in China.

The UB delegation, led by Head Coach Kefentse Monare and Assistant Coach Abednico Sechaba, stood out in both individual and relay events. Gold medal highlights included standout performances by Olefile Kooagile (Civil Engineering) who won the 1500m and 5000m, Khumo Gaonaka (Sports Science) in the 110m hurdles, Kedibonye Dema (Sports Science) in the javelin and Amantle Masilompane (Business Administration) in the shot put. UB also dominated the 4x100m Men, 4x400m Women and 4x400m Men relay events.

Two athletes, Kooagile and Kago Seshoka, have qualified for the FISU World University Games set for July 2025 in Germany. The club is advocating for the inclusion of additional athletes whose performances demonstrate international potential, citing names such as Kabelo D. Masole, Kutlo Lindo, Blessed Majuta and Nothando Johnson, among others.

BOTESSAUB’s participation at BOTESSA 2025 was not without challenges. Delays in event schedules and field competitions disrupted travel plans and late disbursement of funds posed logistical difficulties. Despite this, athletes and staff made personal sacrifices to ensure UB was well-represented.

The Athletics Club also celebrated Motlatsi Rante’s selection to the national team at the World Relays. With Botswana set to host the 2026 World Relays, the University is positioning itself as a key contributor to national athletics development.

Gratitude was extended to the Department of Sports, Culture and Recreation for their support in providing team kits, first aid, recovery refreshments, accommodation and meals. Special mention was given to Nelson Bodilenyane for his steadfast support of the athletics team.

The club concluded that this year’s team was among the most balanced and academically integrated squads and with continued investment and opportunities, the team’s future on the national and international stage looks brighter than ever.
