University of Botswana Phonics Secure Second Place in 7’s International Rugby Tournament

RugbyUniversity of Botswana (UB) Phonics Ladies Rugby Team secured a second spot in 7’s International Rugby tournament after a facing 7- 12 setback against South Africa Tucks Ladies Rugby team at UB stadium recently.

As runners-up, Phonics were awarded a prize of P7,000, while the victorious Tucks team took home P10,000, courtesy of the tournament’s main sponsor, Orange Botswana.

The final match in the women's category was an intense and electrifying contest, with both teams displaying high levels of skill, energy and determination. Phonics put up a formidable defence in the first half, successfully holding back Tucks and playing wide balls that tested their opponents' defensive line. However, in the dying minutes of the match, the South African team capitalised on a defensive lapse by Phonics, securing their victory. Both teams demonstrated immense confidence and strength throughout the game, keeping fans on the edge of their seats.

In the men’s category, UB Rhinos faced a tough challenge in the quarterfinals, suffering a 12-29 defeat to Gabs Hogs. Rhinos finished the tournament in fourth place. Gabs Hogs advanced to the finals, where they overcame their biggest rivals, South African All Stars, in a closely contested 7-5 win to claim the championship. Jwaneng Rugby secured third place, taking home the bronze medal after defeating Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST) in the losers' final.

In pursuit of academic excellence
