University of Botswana Launches UBASSU Academic and Support Staff Lounge

LoungeThe University of Botswana (UB) has officially launched the Academic and Support Staff Union (UBASSU) Staff Lounge, a newly rebranded space designed to foster collaboration, relaxation and camaraderie among academic and support staff.

The inauguration, held on the 22nd of August 2025, marked an important milestone in UBASSU’s ongoing efforts to enhance the working environment and promote a stronger sense of community within the university.

Speaking at the event, UBASSU Vice President, Mrs Lynn Jibril, described the rebranding of the lounge as a pivotal step towards modernising and revitalising the space.

She explained that the initiative was not only about aesthetics but also creating an inclusive environment that encouraged professional growth, networking and relaxation.

“This initiative reflects UBASSU’s dedication to enhancing staff welfare and encouraging a stronger sense of community, working together as one,” said Mrs Jibril.

Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor for Teaching and Learning, Professor Richard Tabulawa, commended UBASSU for what he termed a thoughtful and timely initiative. He noted that the upgraded lounge was more than just an improved physical space.

“It also symbolises the University’s commitment to supporting both academic and support staff in their professional and personal well-being,” he said. Professor Tabulawa UBASSUadded that such initiatives were vital in building a collaborative and motivated workforce which ultimately contributed to the University’s pursuit of academic excellence.

Special recognition was given to Mrs Boipelo Mothibi, UBASSU’s Office Administrator, who was credited as the creative mind behind the interior design of the lounge. Her vision, dedication and meticulous attention to detail transformed the space into a welcoming and inspiring environment for staff.

The newly rebranded lounge is expected to serve as a hub for dialogue, professional development and mutual support, reinforcing UBASSU’s role in championing staff welfare and advancing the interests of its members.
