University of Botswana Launches Grand Table Restaurant to Sharpen Culinary Skills

CulThe University of Botswana (UB) Department of Family and Consumer Science officially launched the Grand Table Restaurant on the 14th November 2024, at Block 247. The initiative aims at enhancing practical culinary skills of students as well as showcase the knowledge they have acquired in their academic training.

The restaurant offers a full-course dining experience featuring Hors d'Oeuvres, soups, salads, entrées, palate cleansers, desserts and beverages. The launch event was graced by esteemed industry experts including Executive Chef Thulani Moyo Fairgrounds Holdings, Food and Beverage Manager Mr Hendrick Bosilong from Avani Resort and Casino, Avani Learning Manager Ms Sefela Nong and Chef Kenneth Tebogo Middleton as well as other representatives from Fairground Holdings.

Speaking at the grand opening, Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Teaching and Learning, Professor Billy Tsima, applauded the initiative as a commitment to UB's strategic goal of fostering innovation and creativity. He underlined the University’s role in advancing Botswana’s transition to a knowledge-based economy and society. Professor Tsima noted that UB's focus on producing skilled, well-rounded graduates aligned with the restaurant’s concept which bridges theoretical knowledge with practical industry application.

"UB values its partnerships with industry players to refine the skills of our students," said Professor Tsima. "The Grand Table Restaurant serves as living evidence of our commitment to producing graduates capable of creating jobs and transforming society."

BillyActing Dean of the Faculty of Education, Professor Maria Nnyepi, explained that the restaurant idea was conceived by students enrolled in the department’s Meal Management course. She added that the restaurant would not only serve as a platform to evaluate students’ teaching and learning outcomes but also aspires to become a fine-dining destination that highlights local cuisine.

“This restaurant reflects our aspiration to feature innovative and locally inspired dishes that resonate with Botswana’s culinary heritage,” said Professor Nnyepi.

The Grand Table Restaurant is expected to bridge the gap between academia and the hospitality industry, fostering a new generation of culinary professionals while contributing to Botswana's economic and cultural growth.
