The University of Botswana (UB), in collaboration with the eMobility Project, participated at the Future of Mining Summit 2025 with the aim of supporting Botswana’s transition to electric vehicles (EVs) by developing local capacity in EV manufacturing, assembly and related services.
The programme, spearheaded by the Botswana Institute for Technology Research and Innovation (BITRI), is being rolled out in phases, beginning with capacity building and retrofitting and eventually leading to the establishment of a full-scale assembly plant. The University also showcased a research project focused on producing construction bricks from waste materials such as fly ash and copper sludge, in a bid to address climate challenges.
The Future of Mining Summit is a key event on Botswana’s calendar aimed at positioning the country as Africa’s leading mining destination. It is endorsed by the Government of Botswana through the Ministry of Minerals and Energy and supported by the Minerals Development Company Botswana (MDCB), the state’s minerals investment arm. The summit provides a platform for knowledge sharing, investment promotion, policy discussions and strategic partnerships.
