The University of Botswana (UB) has donated essential medicines to Moiyabana Clinic to support the healthcare needs of elderly residents in the village.

The donation was made on the 26th of September 2026, as part of UB’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities aimed at giving back to communities and contributing to their wellbeing as Botswana prepares to celebrate 60 years of independence.

Handing over the medicines, Professor Tiny Masupe, a public health expert and Deputy Dean for Research Engagement and Graduate Studies at UB, said the University decided to support elderly people in Moiyabana as part of its commitment to improving the lives of communities.

Professor Maupe said the donation reflected UB’s responsibility as Botswana’s national university to work closely with communities and contribute to addressing some of the challenges they faced.

“As a national university, it is incumbent upon us to work with communities to impact their livelihoods,” said Professor Masupe.

She said UB recognised that access to healthcare was an important component of community wellbeing and that institutions such as UB had a role to play in supporting national efforts to improve healthcare services.

Professor Masupe further said the donation was particularly relevant amid concerns over shortages of medicines in the country.

“As a responsible public institution, UB donated to improve access to healthcare amidst the widely publicised shortage of medicines experienced by the country now,” she said.

The donation is expected to assist Moiyabana Clinic in responding to the healthcare needs of elderly patients who rely on the facility for essential medical services.

The donation also formed part of UB’s broader community engagement efforts, through which the university seeks to use its expertise and resources to make a practical contribution to communities across Botswana.

To that end, as the country marks six (6) decades of independence, the University’s outreach activities underscore the importance of partnerships between higher education institutions and communities in addressing social and development challenges.

The Moiyabana donation, therefore, was hailed as one of the many that the University has undertaken to embark on to give back to the community which built it and achieve meaningful social transformation.

This year marks 44 years since UB first opened its door in the 1st of July1982. Over the last four (4) decades, the institution was pivotal in developing the national human resource as we see it today across many disciplines.

UB is one of the nation’s cherished entities whose existence demonstrates Batswana’s spirit of Ipelegeng and working harmoniously. It was through such that a nation built this first ever public university under the Motho-le-Motho-Kgomo campaign.

It is on that basis, that UB has vowed to deepen its ties with communities over and above its traditional academic boundaries of teaching and learning as well as conducting research.
