UB's Anitah Moiya to Compete at World Miss University Pageant in South Korea

pageantUniversity Botswana student, Anitah Moiya will represent Botswana at the 31st World Miss University pageant on December 21, 2022 in Seoul, South Korea. The 21-year-old, fourth year Psychology and Sociology student will be in Korea for almost a month partaking in preliminary competitions such as head-to-head challenges before the crowning day. World Miss University is an international beauty pageant with almost 70 contestants participating annually since 1986.

The Ramotswa native is no stranger to the pageantry world as she has been doing so since the age of eleven. The former Miss UB 2020 joined beauty pageants as a way of boosting her confidence whereupon she fell in love with the stage. Moiya has won a number of competitions, pushing herself to dream even bigger and trying her luck on the international stage by participating at the World Miss University competition.

Over the years, she realised that through pageantry she could make a difference in the world, going on to embark on a number of projects to tackle issues of mental health in the country. Moiya works with mental patients at the UB Department of Psychology.

Her aim is to bring safety and hygiene to mental patients in mental institutions to ease their recovery. She also works with the University of Botswana clinic and the youth friendly clinic in Bontleng as an ambassador to raise awareness on pre-exposure prophylaxis (Prep) pill among her peers to reduce new HIV infections in the country.

However, Moiya says she is still facing challenges getting sponsors for the competition. Nonetheless, she is grateful to the University of Botswana for its unwavering support in preparation for the competition.

“University of Botswana has been a major mother to me, in the pageant,” acknowledges Moiya.

The University has sponsored some of her expenses, closet for the trip as well as gifts that she will be presenting at the pageant. With support also from her mother coupled with her strong faith, she believes she will bring the crown home.
