University of Botswana (UB) Deputy Vice Chancellor Teaching and Learning, Professor Richard Tabulawa, has encouraged new students to focus on their studies and make full use of available expertise and resources in order to succeed academically.
Professor Tabulawa made the remarks during UB's Orientation Week at the UB Indoor Sports Centre on the 5th of August 2025. He urged the new students to seize every opportunity along their learning journey, emphasising that academic success involved more than just passing exams.
It includes developing critical thinking, problem-solving skills, effective communication and ethical leadership which he noted were key attributes required in the world of work. He also highlighted the importance of fostering innovation, adaptability and a commitment to lifelong learning.
Professor Tabulawa further noted that students' academic success would ultimately be measured by their contribution to the community. He encouraged them to participate in community initiatives and actively engage with fellow students to better understand the UB environment and enhance their role in society. He described the University of Botswana as a fertile ground for holistic development especially where academic growth was complemented by the cultivation of critical thinking, analytical skills and a broadened worldview.
Public Affairs Director, Dr Faith Rapuleng-Tuelo, encouraged the students to be brand ambassadors and market the UB brand through actions and commitment. She further highlighted that students played a critical role in shaping and strengthening UB brand through academic excellence and exhibiting responsible conduct within and outside campus.
Director of Student Welfare, Dr Barbra Pansiri, also encouraged the students to familiarise themselves with the campus environment to ensure a successful and enriching university experience.
She emphasised the importance of understanding the campus culture, available resources and opportunities as key to making the most of their academic journey.
Meanwhile, Student Representative Council (SRC) President, Mr Topo Kwena, also encouraged the students to visit the office to seek help to ensure their needs within campus were addressed.
