UB staff receive long service awards

About 1500 University of Botswana staff members received Long Service Awards in recognition of their loyalty and sterling contribution to the success of the Institution.

Speaking at the awards ceremony on June 14, 2019 at the UB Campus Indoor Sports Centre, Vice Chancellor Professor David Norris congratulated the recipients for their significant contribution towards the fulfilment of the University of Botswana’s goals and aspirations.

Professor Norris highlighted that, UB has contributed immensely in human capital development in Botswana and it is befitting to recognize staff for their commitment and dedication. He further stated that the awards symbolize a special way of saying thank you, for their loyalty and dedication in serving the nation and the institution.

He also encouraged the staff to excel on their work and to be productive by having a good attitude and ethical conduct. To improve employee’s productivity, we need to foster an environment field with positive attitude, where people develop strong work ethics, said Professor Norris.

Meanwhile, Minister of Tertiary Education Research, Science and Technology Mr Thapelo Olopeng said the footprints of Botswana’s success story, can without doubt, be traced from UB. “It is therefore fitting to commend the recipients for their commitment, dedication and selflessness in ensuring UB deliver on its mandate,” said Olopeng.

He also encouraged the management to create a conducive environment and structures to support creativity and innovation among the employees. Furthermore, Mr Olopeng noted that his Ministry is deliberating on the establishment of the National Research Council to manage the Research Fund, and thus increasing Botswana’s research output.

He observed that, such would assist the country to enjoy the full benefits of research and innovation. “In this regard, it is therefore important for researchers to collaborate in order to develop innovations that can change this country,” said Minister Olopeng.

The event was graced by the chancellor of the University of Botswana Ms Linah Mohohlo and the Chairman of House of Chiefs Kgosi Puso Gaborone.
