The University of Botswana (UB) has ushered in a new era of student leadership with the inauguration of the newly appointed Student Representative Council (SRC) and Graduate Student Association (GSA) during a ceremony held at the UB Stadium VIP Lounge. The inauguration saw Mr Topo Kwena sworn in as SRC President alongside his cabinet while Mr Keabetswe Metsi assumed the role of GSA Chairperson with his executive team.
Opening the event, Director of UB Public Affairs, Dr Faith Rapuleng-Tuelo, reminded the incoming leaders of their critical role as the primary voice of the student body. She emphasised that their appointment reflected a deep trust and confidence bestowed upon them by their peers and urged them to work collaboratively with the University leadership to enhance the student experience.
Vice Chancellor, Professor David Norris, reinforced the significance of student governance in shaping the future of the institution. He applauded the student leadership for their potential to bring transformative change and called for their active involvement in university life. Professor Norris underscored the importance of reform and innovation to enhance UB’s relevance to society, urging students to take advantage of available services to develop both academically and professionally.
In his maiden address, SRC President, Mr Topo Kwena, advocated for constitutional reforms aimed at enhancing student representation. He proposed the establishment of a Student Parliament under the SRC structure. The envisioned platform would encompass various levels of student leadership including the Graduate Student Association, a Postgraduate Association and an Undergraduate Committee composed of faculty-elected members, alongside other groups such as the Resident Committee, Off-Campus Student Association, student clubs and societies. He also suggested the creation of new ministries to reflect the evolving needs of the student community.
GSA Chairperson, Mr Keabetswe Metsi, focused his address on human capital development, pointing to the University of Botswana’s status as the country’s leading producer of human capital. He appealed for more practical training opportunities and part-time employment for students to enhance their employability. Mr Metsi advocated for student involvement beyond the classroom particularly within UB’s administrative operations to build skills and professional experience.
The ceremony concluded with remarks from Deputy Vice Chancellor for Teaching and Learning, Professor Richard Tabulawa, who called for unity and collaboration between the SRC and GSA. He emphasised that their collective leadership would be crucial in addressing student issues, promoting academic excellence and building a vibrant and inclusive campus environment.
