UB Researcher Dr Hesekia Garekae Receives 2025 Botswana Young Scientist Award

HesekiaUniversity of Botswana (UB) researcher, Dr Hesekia Garekae, has been honoured with the prestigious 2025 Botswana Young Scientist Award (YSA), receiving the accolade today during a special ceremony held at the Gaborone International Convention Centre (GICC). The award is conferred by the Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM) in partnership with the Government of Botswana and RUFORUM Member Universities.

The Young Scientist Award recognises outstanding scientific contributions, exceptional commitment to research excellence and leadership in advancing knowledge within emerging fields. Dr Garekae distinguished himself through impactful research whose relevance spans national, regional and continental development priorities.

In its official communication, RUFORUM commended Dr Garekae’s work for shaping critical conversations in his field and contributing to a stronger, knowledge-driven society. His selection reflects the high regard in which his scholarship is held by peers and institutions across Botswana.

Today’s ceremony, held at the GICC, brought together government officials, academics, researchers and development partners to celebrate excellence in science and innovation. Speaking after receiving the honour, Dr Garekae expressed gratitude to RUFORUM and the Government of Botswana, noting that the recognition “reinforces the importance of research that responds to community needs and drives sustainable development.”

The YSA presentation forms part of the 21st RUFORUM Annual General Meeting (AGM) and the conferral of the award underscores Botswana’s commitment to recognising and uplifting scientific excellence.
