University of Botswana (UB) Vice Chancellor, Professor David Norris, says UB continues to play a pivotal role in driving the nation’s economic transformation through quality education, human capital development, research and innovation.
Professor Norris made the remarks during a courtesy visit by a delegation from the University of the Free State (UFS) Department of Student Affairs on the 3rd of December 2025. The delegation included UFS Executive Director for Student Affairs, Dr Temba Hlasho; Deputy Vice Chancellor for Institutional Change, Dr Molapo Qhobela and Vice Campus Principal for Qwaqwa, Mr Tebogo Manchu.
During the visit, Professor Norris emphasised that universities were central to economic diversification particularly in transitioning from a traditional, resource-based economy to a resilient, knowledge-driven one. He said modern economies thrived on knowledge-based enterprises, making it essential for universities to create environments that nurtured talent and unlocked youth potential.
Professor Norris further noted that universities across the region faced similar challenges, underscoring the need for collaboration to develop effective, sustainable solutions. He added that partnerships between UB and UFS would enhance research impact and strengthen academic programmes including student and staff exchanges.
Meanwhile, UFS Deputy Vice Chancellor for Institutional Change, Dr Qhobela, said the purpose of the visit was to benchmark UB’s academic and social support systems such as counselling, mentorship and student engagement programmes. He said UFS was also exploring potential areas of collaboration in research and student exchange initiatives.
