The University of Botswana (UB) Omega LEO Club recently raised the national flag high, showcasing the University’s academic excellence at the regional LEO Club Convention held in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, from 10th to 13th April 2025. The student-led delegation took advantage of the platform not only to promote youth leadership and service but also to drive student recruitment and institutional branding efforts on behalf of UB.
With participants drawn from across southern Africa, including Zimbabwe, Zambia and other neighbouring countries, the convention offered a valuable opportunity to showcase the UB's academic programmes, research strengths and community engagement credentials.
As part of their outreach, the UB Omega LEO Club distributed over 100 UB admissions handbooks to prospective students, educators and LEO mentors. The materials included information on both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, entry requirements and scholarship opportunities. Club members also offered personalised guidance to interested learners, positioning UB as a top choice for higher education in the region.
The team also networked with representatives from more than 20 LEO Clubs and youth development organisations, laying the groundwork for future institutional partnerships and cross-border collaborations. Such engagements were key in promoting UB’s vision of academic excellence, leadership development and global citizenship.
Despite the club’s primary focus on outreach, its exceptional service efforts did not go unnoticed. During the convention’s awards ceremony, the UB Omega LEO Club was honoured with two Silver Medals: one for Omega LEO Club of the Year and another for Service Project of the Year.
The UB delegation included seven dynamic student leaders - Chengeto Ruvimbo Mudzi, Ryan Kafesu, Tinayeshe Dombo, Tadiwanashe Nyanhanda, Nicole Ratidzo Sigobodhla, Albert Mwilambwe Mukalay and Ashley Mukuku - led by their patron, Dr K. Bodilenyane. Their participation embodied the University’s commitment to empowering students as ambassadors of both service and scholarship.
The club expressed heartfelt appreciation to the University of Botswana particularly the Department of Public Affairs for providing vital institutional branding materials that supported their outreach. Special thanks were also extended to Dr Bodilenyane for his mentorship and unwavering support throughout the initiative.
As the curtain fell on the convention, one thing was clear, the University of Botswana is not just nurturing students for degrees but grooming future leaders for Africa and beyond.
