Demonstrating strategic foresight in reshaping Botswana’s innovation and entrepreneurship landscape, the University of Botswana (UB) has taken initiative by collaborating with Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT) in launching the MIT Sandbox Pilot Programme, positioning itself as a central driver of innovation and entrepreneurial transformation.

Speaking at a public lecture titled “Unlocking Innovation Potential through University-Led Entrepreneurship,” hosted by UB Director UniPod , Professor Richie Moalosi emphasised the urgent need to address the shrinking job market by equipping students with entrepreneurial skills and opportunities.

“Innovation must be at the heart of our national vision as such UB is committed to creating an environment where students can thrive as innovators and entrepreneurs,” he emphasised.

Prof. Moalosi underscored UB's contribution to the initiative's localisation by creating an innovation friendly environment that is focused on Botswana and not just merely implementing a model. Noting that the value being driven by UB, was to make sure students have access to industry networks, mentorship, and the resources they need to be successful.

The event, held in collaboration with the Ministry of Trade and Entrepreneurship, featured keynote presentations by Dr Jinane Abounadi, Executive Director of the MIT Sandbox Innovation Fund Programme, and Dr Marwan Hassoun, Director of Partnerships at MIT. Both speakers shared insights on how MIT’s successful model of student led innovation continues to produce thousands of startups and jobs globally.

According to the duo, the MIT Sandbox programme was designed to lower barriers for students by providing funding, mentorship, and access to industry experts.  Further highlighting  that each semester, it supported around 350 projects, with 50 to 60 startups launched annually, many of which continue beyond graduation. Dr. Abounadi pointed out the importance of cultivating an entrepreneurial mindset.

“This is about more than launching companies—it’s about empowering students to solve real-world problems and create meaningful change,” she said.

The MIT Sandbox pilot is a necessary augmentation  in Botswana’s journey toward a knowledge based economy. By championing university-led entrepreneurship, UB is setting the stage for a new generation of innovators who will shape the country’s future.
