The University of Botswana (UB) Karate Club delivered an exceptional performance at the Botswana Karate Association (BOKA) 2026 Junior National Team Final Selection held over the weekend at the UB Indoor Sports Centre.
The event brought together some of the country’s most promising young karate athletes, who competed for places in the national team in both kata and kumite. Competing on home ground, the UB Karate Club rose to the occasion with a commanding display of skill, discipline and determination.
UB athletes stood out across several categories, winning an impressive five (5) gold medals and further underlining the club’s growing strength in the sport. Among the top performers were Angel Candy, who won gold in the female +68kg category, Aniah Moeng, who claimed gold in the female -68kg division and Leah Kgosiemang, who secured gold in the female -61kg category. In the male division, Theo Chabi also struck gold in the +84kg category, while Wedu Basha Solomon delivered a standout performance to win gold in the female -55kg kumite category.
The club’s success did not end there. Mildred Obuile added to UB’s medal haul with an impressive silver medal in kumite and a bronze medal in kata, demonstrating versatility and strong technical ability.
The athletes displayed sharp technique, strong kime, controlled breathing and confident presentation throughout the competition, reflecting the high technical standards and dedication that continue to define the UB Karate Club. Their performances also highlighted the impact of committed leadership and coaching in preparing athletes for national competition.
Overall, the selection event showcased a high level of discipline, competitiveness and talent as athletes battled for national team positions. For UB, the results marked a proud moment and reaffirmed the University’s commitment to nurturing sporting excellence alongside academic achievement.
