The University of Botswana (UB) joined the Botswana Institute of Chartered Accountants (BICA) to launch a landmark Bachelor of Commerce in Chartered Accounting programme on the 27th of November 2025 at BICA.
Speaking at the launch Botswana Accountancy College School of Finance and Professional Studies Director, Mr Eugen Mwaba, said the programme was designed to elevate accounting education and produce globally competitive professionals.
Mr Mwaba said the introduction of the programme was a direct response to the skills needs identified by Human Resource Development Council (HRDC) in chartered accountancy and tax specialist as critical skills needed in Botswana to drive economic development. He further noted that it aimed at boosting the number of professional chartered accountants in Botswana.
BICA Chief Executive Officer, Mr Oaitse Gabadirwe, explained that the Bachelor of Commerce in Chartered Accounting equipped students with competencies in financial reporting, auditing, taxation, managerial finance, ethics and technological adaptation.
In addition, Mr Gabadirwe said it opened doors to diverse career pathways and provided a direct articulation route into Botswana Chartered Accountancy qualification and other esteemed international designations
“The programme is a dedicated feeder, providing the essential academic foundation for students to progress efficiently into the final stages of the chartered accountancy qualification, thereby accelerating the journey to becoming a chartered accountant whilst ensuring that graduates are well equipped and workplace ready,” said Mr Gabadirwe.
UB Distance Education Coordinator, Dr Masego Morima, said the introduction of the programme indicated commitment towards development and strengthening of accountancy profession in Botswana. She added that the programme addressed practical workplace demands and produced well rounded graduates.
