The University of Botswana Innovation Centre received a generous donation of twenty (20) laptops from the First National Bank Botswana (FNB).
In his welcoming remarks, Professor David Norris, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Botswana, extended heartfelt appreciation to the FNB for their valuable contribution. He emphasized the significance of this assistance in aiding the UB Innovation Centre to fulfil its mission in research and innovation.
UB established an innovation center with the aim of fostering value chain research, development, and the incubation of companies. Highlighting the abundant talent and innovative ideas among the youth of Botswana, Professor Norris emphasized the need for a nurturing environment to harness their potential.
Prof Norris drew parallels with countries like Australia and the United States, where universities play pivotal roles in driving value chain research, development, innovation, and artificial intelligence to bolster economic growth. He underscored the importance of collaboration with industries and private entities such as the FNBB Foundation to empower the youth.
Professor Norris stressed that the UB Innovation Centre welcomes individuals with impactful ideas that contribute positively to society.
For his part the Director of the UB innovation Centre, Prof Richie Moalosi reiterated the center's mandate to promote innovation and research, ultimately leading to the commercialization of products and services.
Prof Moalosi further emphasized that the center not only provides support for incubation and entrepreneurship but also aims to cultivate and maintain partnerships with industries. He added that another key mandate of the center is to foster outreach and engagement with communities.
Speaking at the Ceremony, The FNB Information Officer Mr. Moses Mcgeoff, underscored the community-oriented nature of the initiative, stating that the provision of laptops will benefit students and all visitors to the Center. He emphasized the value of these high-end machines will enhance the Center's operations.
