The University of Botswana High Performance Centre (UBHPC) has received international acclaim after being awarded the prestigious ASPC Commemorative Plaque - Bronze during the 21st General Assembly of the Association of Sport Performance Centres (ASPC). The award was conferred at the 2025 International Forum on Elite Sport, held in Helsinki, Finland, from the 29th of September to the 3rd of October 2025.
Representing the University of Botswana at the ceremony were Dr Comfort J. Mokgothu and Mr. Nonofo Othusitse, who accepted the award on behalf of the Centre. The event brought together leading sport performance institutions and experts from around the globe, all committed to advancing elite sport through science, innovation and collaboration.
The ASPC Commemorative Plaque - Bronze is a mark of international excellence that recognises high performance centres demonstrating exceptional standards in athlete development, scientific research and sports management. For UBHPC, this milestone signifies not only international recognition but also its rising influence within the global sporting community.
The University of Botswana hailed the recognition as “a testament to the Centre’s commitment to excellence, innovation and the pursuit of world-class standards in sport performance and athlete support.”
Established to serve as a hub for elite athlete training and sports science research, the UBHPC has steadily grown in prominence since joining the ASPC network in 2019. The Centre has contributed to research, athlete monitoring and promotion of evidence-based practices in sport performance. The UBHPC has trained athletes such as Isaac Makwala, Amantle Montsho, Nijel Amos and The Mares.
The ASPC is a global network that brings together elite sport institutions from over 40 countries. It facilitates collaboration, professional exchange and knowledge sharing to improve the quality of high-performance sport systems worldwide.
UBHPC’s recognition places Botswana among a select group of nations acknowledged for contributing to the global high-performance sport movement. With this accolade, the University of Botswana strengthens its position as a key player in Africa’s sports development landscape and continues to inspire the next generation of athletes and researchers.
