University of Botswana (UB) Hawks kept their survival hopes alive in the Debswana First Division South League after securing a crucial 1-1 draw against Taung Young Strikers at Lekidi Football Grounds 24th May 2025.
Hawks, who trailed 1-0 at halftime, clawed their way back into the game with a well-taken equaliser from Bokang Kgwarare. The center-back, who was later named Man of the Match, put in a standout performance, anchoring the defence while also stepping up in attack to score the decisive goal. His efforts ensured that the Basco Boys avoided defeat and walked away with a valuable point.
Taung Young Strikers broke the deadlock early in the first half, capitalising on a slow start from Hawks. However, UB showed resilience and remained persistent throughout the match. Head Coach, Alex Malete, made several tactical adjustments at halftime, bringing on fresh legs and encouraging play down the flanks to try and break through Taung’s compact low-block defence.
The changes paid off in the second half, with UB Hawks dominating possession and threatening in attack. Mmoloki “Muller” Kgaswane came close to netting the winner with a powerful header late in the game but the attempt narrowly missed the target.
Despite the spirited performance, Hawks remain in a precarious position on the league table. With just one game left in the 2024/25 season, Hawks sit in 10th place with 21 points, just three points and a single goal ahead of 11th-placed Dessert Nxau FC, who are also fighting to escape relegation.
UB Hawks must now secure a win in their final fixture against City Polar Football Club to guarantee their stay in the league. Anything less than three points could spell relegation, depending on Dessert Nxau’s result.
As the league season draws to a dramatic close, all eyes will be on the Basco Boys as they battle to preserve their First Division status.
