University of Botswana students enrolled in the Department of Geology recently completed their eight-week of attachment with Kavango Minerals in Tshane in the Kgalagadi District. Kavango Minerals is a mineral exploration company based in Botswana.

The female students, Ms Rethabile Kate and Ms Boitumelo Mokgethi, embarked on an eight-week hands-on training as part of their final year project in Geology. The programme was fully funded by Kavango minerals and offered the two students hands on experience working in a professional environment. They were given rock samples to analyze and compile a thesis., The students are currently compiling a final report under the supervision of Dr Zibisani Biza Bagai, who is a lecturer in geological sciences at the University of Botswana. The collaboration between UB and Kavango Minerals has afforded these students much-needed industry exposure that will greatly improve their job prospects after graduation.

Kavango Minerals and the University of Botswana signed a Memorandum of Understanding in December 2021 with the objective of engaging in activities of mutual benefit and cooperation by sharing skills on minerals exploration and training of students. Therefore, both parties are fulfilling their mandate. By having UB students attached with Kavango, the University is well on its way to fulfilling its strategic mandate of producing graduate with skills and competencies to drive human resource needs of an export driven knowledge-based economy as well as producing industry ready graduates.
