The University of Botswana (UB) held its 22nd annual UB Foundation Dinner on the 29th of November 2024 at the Gaborone International Convention Centre (GICC). The event, themed "Advancing Global Health Through Science Innovation," was a night of elegance, purpose and commitment to supporting education and innovation in Botswana.
In his opening remarks, UB Vice Chancellor, Professor David Norris, highlighted the significance of the dinner in advancing both the University’s and Botswana’s economic growth. “Tonight, we honour groundbreaking ideas, collaborative efforts and bold visions driving solutions to some of the most pressing health challenges. Together, we embrace the spirit of innovation and the promise of a future where access to health and wellness knows no boundaries,” said Professor Norris.
UB Foundation Chairman, Dr Abdul Satar Dada, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the attendees and sponsors, underlining the tangible impact of their contributions. He noted that funds raised from past events had enabled underprivileged students to access virtual learning and teaching resources. “This is an indication that with increased support, we can do more for our students. I therefore plead with you to continue supporting our events and donating to the Foundation to sustain this noble cause,” he added.
Delivering the keynote address, Minister of Higher Education, Honorable Prince Maele, commended the Foundation’s efforts, underscoring the importance of education in uplifting communities. “Events like this have a profound impact, reaching beyond the University into the hearts of communities, providing the necessary opportunities and support where they are most needed. As we gather tonight, we reaffirm our collective responsibility to uplift those who are less fortunate, ensuring that no one is left behind in our pursuit of progress and equality,” said Minister Maele.
Guest speaker, Professor Sikhulile Moyo, a renowned expert in global health, delivered an insightful speech on the economic benefits of science-driven innovation in healthcare. He outlined key advantages, including economic growth, healthcare cost efficiency, disease prevention, global collaboration and improved quality of life. “Innovation creates industries, improves productivity and enhances the quality of life while addressing pressing healthcare challenges in our communities,” noted Professor Moyo.
In closing, UB Chancellor, Ms Tebelelo Mazile Seretse, extended a heartfelt vote of thanks to the speakers, sponsors and attendees for their unwavering support. She commended the evening’s focus on collaboration and innovation, urging all stakeholders to continue striving for a world where science served humanity in impactful ways. “The insights shared tonight have truly illuminated the transformative role of science and innovation in global health,” she said.
