Students from the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences recently brought creativity and cultural pride to life through a vibrant fashion show themed Botswana’s Iconic in Fashion, held on 9th of May 2025. The showcase, part of their examination project, featured fashion collections inspired by prominent Botswana figures, blending artistry, storytelling and cultural identity into compelling runway designs.
Far more than a display of clothing, the glamorous event was a celebration of fashion as an expressive art form - one that evokes emotion, tells stories and leaves a lasting impression. The runway served as a platform for the students to communicate their design visions, moving beyond trends to embody narratives rooted in Botswana’s heritage and icons.
The primary objective of the event was to sharpen students’ entrepreneurial and design skills, prepare them for business ventures in the fashion industry and increase visibility for the Family and Consumer Sciences discipline. The show also served as a networking opportunity, linking students with industry players and potential mentors.
Speaking at the event, Acting Head of Department, Dr Lily Fidzane, noted that throughout the semester, students in the Apparel Design and Product Development and Tailoring Techniques courses conducted market surveys to understand consumer needs in clothing design. Based on their findings, students selected local icons as inspiration and researched current fashion trends to create contemporary garments suitable for both corporate settings and cocktail events.
Dr Fidzane commended the students for their innovation and commitment, adding that such projects not only boosted confidence and creativity but also prepared them for real-world challenges in the fashion and textile industry.
