UB Empowers Final Year Social Work Students with Entrepreneurial and Industry Insights

Social workThe University of Botswana’s Department of Social Work recently hosted a strategic workshop for final-year students aimed at preparing them for the professional landscape beyond graduation. The workshop formed a core component of the Youth and Social Entrepreneurship seminar facilitated by Dr Kgomotso Jongman.

Bringing together representatives from the Department of Social Development, Botswana National Youth Council (BNYC) and Ministry of Youth and Gender Affairs, the session offered Level 400 students an unfiltered view of the realities shaping the social work sector.

The panel unpacked contemporary challenges while highlighting emerging opportunities to ensure that graduates entered the field with a market-ready perspective.

A central focus of the workshop was to challenge traditional employment models. Students were encouraged to explore alternative career pathways including strategic partnerships with institutions such as the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development and BNYC.

In particular, the BNYC led an Entrepreneurial Pivot session, introducing students to social entrepreneurship and offering practical guidance on how to monetise their skills through innovative private-sector initiatives.

Ultimately, the workshop sought to reposition graduates from jobseekers to solution providers, equipped to build sustainable, impactful and socially responsive professional identities.
