UB Debate Masters Association Finishes 16th at African Varsities Debate Champs

UBDAThe University of Botswana Debate Masters Association (UBDMA) recently embarked on a transformative journey to Lome, Togo, to participate in the prestigious Pan African Universities Debate Championship. UBDMA sent a team of three students - Bongile Atang Asante Kegapilwe, Ruby Wanjiku Njonde and Tshiamo Brian Badubi.

The team reached the quarter final stage where it finished 16th out of 72 teams. In addition to the team’s outstanding performance, Tshiamo Brian Badubi, who is also the 2023/24 UBSRC Minister of Student Affairs was elected Director of Communication for the Pan African Universities Council.

This the highest body in the African debate space. The event brought together over 300 students, scholars, and experts from different parts of the African continent and beyond. This multicultural exchange enriches students' understanding of global issues and cultivates cultural sensitivity, contributing to their holistic development.

TeamAs Brand Ambassadors of the University of Botswana, this was an opportunity to create awareness to other students who may develop interest in studying at UB hence improving the University’s enrollment rate. UBDMA’S active participation and representation at the Pan African Debate Championship reflected positively on the University of Botswana's commitment to promoting academic excellence, intellectual growth, and international engagement. It enhances the reputation of UB at both national and continental levels. Further, it is in line with the University’s vision of becoming a distinctive centre of academic excellence in Botswana, Africa and the World.
