UB Crystal Netball Team Strikes Silver at Division B Netball Final

CrstalsUniversity of Botswana (UB) Crystals made an impressive start in Division B, finishing as silver medallists at the Division B Top 8 Finals held over the weekend at the Royal Aria Indoor Courts in Tlokweng.

The Botswana Netball Association (BONA) Division B Top 8 Finals brought together some of the country’s top-performing netball teams over the weekend at the Royal Aria Indoor Courts in Tlokweng.

UB Crystals put up a spirited performance but narrowly lost 30–37 to Prisons in a closely contested final. Prisons led 12–9 in the first quarter but Crystals responded strongly in the second quarter, tightening their defence and closing the gap as the match progressed.

Despite the defeat, Crystals displayed determination, unity and fighting spirit throughout the encounter, reflecting their commitment to representing the University with pride. Goal shooter Katlego Malele stood out with her agility and precision, effectively challenging taller defenders and converting crucial scoring opportunities. Wing attacker, Olorato Phokontsi, impressed with her pace and intelligent playmaking, creating several scoring chances for Malele and goal attacker, Kamogelo Ngwaga. Wing defender, Boikobo Mbambo, was a key performer on the day, making crucial interceptions and deflections. Her efforts earned her the Best Mid-Court Player award at the finals.

CrystalsSpeaking after the match, Coach Abednico Chetelo praised the team’s resilience and fighting spirit, noting that six (6) players only joined the squad two (2) days before the tournament but still delivered a strong tactical performance.

He acknowledged challenges including the absence of wing defender, Chizomo Haeya, who was unavailable due to school commitments but had played a key role in helping the team qualify for the Top 8 Finals during the Orapa Netball Tournament.
