UB Confucius Institute Celebrates 50 Years of Botswana-China Diplomatic Relations

CIUBThe Confucius Institute at the University of Botswana (CIUB), in collaboration with the Chinese Enterprises Association, recently hosted a cultural event titled “My Story with China” to mark the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Botswana and China. The celebration, held on the 29th of October 2025 at Maitisong Theatre, Maru-a-Pula School, brought together students, professionals and community members to share stories that reflected the enduring friendship and cultural ties between the two nations.

Speaking at the event, the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Botswana, H.E. Fan Yong, commended the Confucius Institute for organising the commemoration, describing it as a reflection of the deep and growing bond between Botswana and China. He highlighted the importance of people-to-people exchanges, noting that shared experiences and cultural understanding continued to strengthen cooperation in education, culture and development.

“Through personal narratives and shared memories, we reflect not only on the milestones of cooperation and development but also on the human connections that have woven our people together,” said Ambassador Fan Yong. “This celebration is a testament to the strength of our partnership and a promise for even greater collaboration in the years to come.”

Delivering the vote of thanks, UB Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Maria Nnyepi, expressed gratitude to Ambassador Fan Yong and the Confucius Institute for their continued support and dedication to strengthening Botswana-China relations. She commended all participants for contributing to the cultural exchange, emphasising that such initiatives fostered academic and diplomatic collaboration.

The event featured captivating performances, including poems, songs and dances that celebrated cross-cultural understanding. Participants such as Sharon Khumomotse, Pearl Mbise, Nomsa Lotus Kelepile and Lindiwe Ramooki shared heartfelt stories of their experiences with China, creating a powerful narrative of mutual respect and learning.
