The University of Botswana (UB) and the Embassy of Ukraine in Botswana have strengthened their growing partnership through the launch of the University of Botswana Unity Park, a new landmark aimed at celebrating friendship, collaboration and cultural exchange.
The park was officially unveiled by UB Vice Chancellor, Professor David Norris and Ukraine's Ambassador to Botswana, Dr Oleksiy Syvak, during a ceremony held on campus today (22 June 2026).
Speaking at the launch, Professor Norris described the establishment of the park as a testament to the value of collaboration and the positive outcomes that can be achieved when institutions and partners work together towards a common goal.
Professor Norris noted that the initiative reflected the strong relationship between the University and the Embassy of Ukraine and contributed to enhancing the campus environment while promoting international cooperation.
For his part, Dr Syvak emphasised the historical significance of the park, noting that its location adjacent to the University's first administration block gave it a special place in UB's history and heritage. He said the park was intended not merely as a recreational space but as a symbol of shared values, friendship and mutual understanding.
Dr Syvak further highlighted the growing collaboration between the University and the Embassy, revealing plans to present a digitised Setswana textbook for Ukrainian learners as part of ongoing efforts to promote cultural and linguistic exchange between the two countries.
As part of the launch, the Ambassador also unveiled a digital audio guide that visitors can access through a QR code installed at the park. The guide provides information about the park. Dr Syvak explained that there were plans to expand the initiative by digitising additional languages, enabling more people from around the world to learn about the University and the country.
The launch of Unity Park marks another milestone in the partnership between UB and the Embassy of Ukraine, demonstrating how international collaboration can create lasting educational, cultural and technological opportunities for communities.
