Botswana’s circular economy story is taking centre stage in Berlin, Germany, where University of Botswana (UB) chemist, Mr Katlego Botshelo, is representing the country at the prestigious Falling Walls Science Summit.
Katlego, co-founder of FORECHEM05 Solutions and winner of Falling Walls Lab Gaborone, is pitching a groundbreaking innovation, FERTEX, a sustainable organic biofertiliser made from biological hair waste sourced from tanneries, abattoirs and hair salons across Botswana.
Developed by a team of forensic scientists, FERTEX converts a persistent pollutant into a valuable agricultural resource, advancing both waste management and eco-friendly farming. Under the bright lights of a packed Berlin auditorium, Katlego’s data-driven and passionate presentation is expected to resonate with the international jury and audience.
His participation reflects not only his personal achievement but also the University of Botswana’s growing role as a hub for research, innovation and sustainability. His presentation highlights how circular economy principles can transform discarded materials into climate-smart solutions.
Beyond the competition, Katlego’s participation reflects UB’s growing footprint in global innovation circles. Earlier today, he networked with scientists, business pioneers and policymakers, reinforcing UB’s reputation as a hub for sustainable research and African ingenuity. As the world watches, the young chemist stands not just as a contestant but as a symbol of Botswana’s potential to offer climate solutions with global resonance.
