Turkey Ambassador pays courtesy call to UB

The Ambassador of Turkey to Botswana, Her Excellency Ms Meltem Buyukkarakas paid a courtesy call to the University of Botswana on June 17, 2019 to explore possible areas of collaborations on Research, Education and Training.

Speaking during the courtesy call, Her Excellency Ms Buyukkarakas proposed that UB should act as a conduit to facilitate knowledge sharing between Botswana and Turkey.

She added that, both countries should learn from each other as an effort to contribute to the expansion of their economies. Botswana can learn from Turkey on how to diversify its economy, therefore assisting Botswana to address the challenges of unemployment.

In response UB Acting Vice Chancellor, Professor Happy Simphambe expressed his honour and appreciation to host the Turkey Ambassador to discuss and share ideas on how to improve their relations for the benefit of their countries

He said Botswana is geared at becoming self-sufficient and therefore, the country can tap on Turkey’s Agriculture experiences. Other possible areas for collaboration include: health, students and staff exchange programmes.

For her part, UB Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic Affairs, Dr Nkomazana noted that the university continues to play a pivotal role in the development of Botswana. She further stated that the university is positioning itself to take a leading role in transforming Botswana’s economy to a knowledge based.

“That can only be achieved by forging collaborations on research with stakeholder and other international universities,” said Dr Nkomazana.

Dr Nkomazana also expressed her desire to collaborate with Universities in Turkey on performing arts, and cultural exchange.
