Students Receive Leadership Awards

University of Botswana student leaders from various cadres received awards on July 16, 2020 in recognition of their active participation in student activities.

The 2020 Mini Leadership Awards were organised by the Department of Student Welfare at the Student Centre Foyer to recognise best performers in student leadership. This year’s awards were inclusive of all student leadership cadres.

Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor Student Affairs, Mrs Motsei Rapelana, indicated that the awards were meant to encourage student leaders to work hard to enhance their potential for more life opportunities. Mrs Rapelana encouraged those who did not receive awards to work hard in the coming year.

She said students were exposed to various opportunities including leadership positions to gain experience. “They are voted into these positions whilst others are hired on partime basis by the university, “ said Mrs Rapelana.

She explained that leadership was about responsibility and accountability hence each student must exercise those two traits all the time.

Imtro Vision Director, Mr Tumelo Masalila, encouraged the student leaders to develop further their leadership skills and to remain disciplined. The student leadership awards comprised various categories and winners included the following: Best Resident Award went to Theo Ofetotse while Volunteer Coordinator Award went to Omphemetse Dubulu. Volunteer Coordinator Best Accumulated Time Award was awarded to Moagisi Setimela while Volunteer General Best Accumulated Time went to Thabang Keatshotse.

In the student club category the winners were Archaeology Club who got the Academic Award. Leadership and Empowerment Award went to UB Entrepreneurs Association Club and Best Club in Community Engagement Award went to Social Work Society Club. Best Religion Based Club Award went to Elohim Society while Best up Coming Club Award went to UB Union Society.

 Appreciation Award category comprised the following: Appreciation Award Active Participation in (GSA) went to Thuso Molefe and Student Representative Council (SRC) and Leaving and Learning community members (LLC). Most Active Peer Orientators Award went to Rosinah Bobonong while Most Active Block Award was won by Block 473.

Under the sports category, Best Male Football Team Award went to Block 449/463 while Best Male Water Polo Award went to Block 429/431. Best Female Water Polo Award went to Offcamp (PHR) Team, Best Male Hand Award went to Block 429/431 while best female Handball Award was won by Block 419/427. Best Male Netball Team Award went to Vegas while on the females category it went to Block 473.
