Student Leadership Awards Celebrate Innovation, Service and Excellence Through Purposeful Leadership

AwardsThe University of Botswana (UB) Department of Student Life and Experience hosted the Student Leadership Awards Ceremony at the Student Centre Foyer on the 12th of May 2026, celebrating student leaders whose innovation, service and commitment continue to enrich campus life.

Held under the theme, “Innovation through Leadership, Excellence through Action,” the event brought together students, staff and invited guests to honour outstanding achievement in student leadership, academic excellence and co-curricular engagement.

In her welcome remarks, Director of Student Life and Experience, Dr Barbra Pansiri, congratulated both nominees and award recipients for their resilience, dedication and positive impact on the University community. She encouraged students to continue leading with integrity, collaboration and a strong sense of service.

Delivering a motivational address, financial industry analyst, Mr Ncedani Icho Mochakula, urged students to view leadership as a journey of growth, resilience and continuous learning. Drawing on his professional experience, he highlighted the importance of discipline, innovation, adaptability and integrity in achieving meaningful success.

In his keynote address, Acting Director of Teaching and Learning Innovation, Professor Olekae Thakadu, underscored the role of student leadership in advancing innovation, academic excellence and societal transformation. Professor Thakadu reminded students that true leadership was demonstrated through service, accountability, collaboration and courage to act on new ideas.

The ceremony featured a range of award categories recognising exceptional contributions during the 2025/2026 academic year. They included the Best Graduate Studies Association Leader Award, Best Performing Club Award, Living and Learning Community Ambassador Award, Most Excelling Student Leader Award and several Special Recognition Awards.

OlekaeIn his closing remarks, Student Representative Council (SRC) President, Mr Neville Sechele, thanked the organisers, guests and students for making the event a success. Mr Sechele congratulated the award recipients and encouraged all students to continue striving for excellence and making a positive contribution to the University community.

The ceremony reaffirmed the University of Botswana’s commitment to nurturing student leaders who are not only academically accomplished but also prepared to drive innovation and make a lasting impact in society.
