SRC Seminar Champions Pan-African Unity and Economic Liberation

SRCUniversity of Botswana’s Students’ Representative Council (SRC) hosted a Pan-Africanism Youth Leadership Seminar at the UB Library Auditorium on the 10th of May 2025, rallying young African leaders around the theme “Africa’s Land, Economic Liberation, and the Importance of African Solidarity.” The seminar served as a powerful platform to inspire dialogue and action on the continent’s socio-economic emancipation, resource sovereignty and unity.

Keynote speaker, Hon. Kandishaya, Chairperson of the African Youth Commission (AYC), delivered a compelling message on the urgency of reclaiming Africa’s natural resources and land. He stressed that true independence could only be achieved through economic control and that unity among African nations was essential for sustainable progress. “No African country can rise alone  -  our struggles and victories are interconnected. Unity is not a choice, it is our lifeline,” he declared.

In his opening remarks, UB SRC President, Topo Kwena, described the seminar as a platform for igniting youth leadership and self-determination. “Africa’s future lies in the hands of its young people,” he said, urging participants to engage meaningfully and generate solutions that would drive development and independence.

Echoing the same message, SRC Minister of Justice, Wetsho Letang, underscored the power of unity in dismantling colonial legacies. He challenged delegates to view themselves as changemakers who must champion a united and self-reliant Africa.

SRC Secretary General, Obonye Mogapi, drew inspiration from past African leaders, urging young people to carry forward the legacy of Pan-Africanism through practical action, innovation and collaboration. “Our heroes taught us resilience and unity - now it’s our turn,” he said.

Closing the event, Minister of International Relations Dr Phenyo Butale, praised the seminar for igniting a transformative conversation. He called on Africa’s youth to move beyond dialogue and turn Pan-African ideals into deliberate, actionable change. “Africa’s destiny lies in the hands of its own people especially its youth,” he said.

The seminar concluded with renewed energy among participants to pursue continental solidarity, economic liberation, and youth-led development.
