School of Pharmacy Reviews Programme Framework to Strengthen Curriculum

ReviewUniversity of Botswana (UB) School of Pharmacy convened a stakeholder consultative workshop today (27th January 2025) aimed at reviewing the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Hon) programme framework to ensure relevance and alignment with current industry and healthcare sector demands.

The workshop brought together academic staff from the School of Pharmacy, pharmacy industry practitioners from the community, hospital and industrial sectors, representatives from healthcare institutions, professional and regulatory bodies, government stakeholders involved in health and medicines management such as Central Medical stores (CMS), Botswana Medicines Regulatory Authority (BoMRA), Gaborone Private Hospital as well as alumni and student representatives.

Speaking at the workshop, the Acting Dean, Faculty of Health Sciences, Professor Mable Magowe, emphasised the importance of continuous programme review in sustaining academic excellence and societal impact.

“This review process is critical in ensuring that our Pharmacy programme remains relevant and produces industry-ready graduates who are able to make a meaningful difference in society,” reiterated Professor Magowe.

Furthermore, the review initiative aligns with UB'’s strategic goals which prioritise the development of high-quality, well-rounded and employable graduates through ongoing engagement with industry and professional stakeholders.

“By engaging stakeholders across the pharmaceutical value chain, we are strengthening the link between academic training and industry expectations, in line with the University of Botswana’s commitment to producing graduates who are competitive, innovative and responsive to market demands,” added Professor Magowe

Moreover, the outcomes of the workshop are expected to inform curriculum enhancements that will further strengthen the programme’s contribution to Botswana’s healthcare system and national development priorities.
