University of Botswana (UB) Deputy Vice Chancellor, Teaching and Learning, Professor Richard Tabulawa has urged the newly elected UB Student Representative Council (SRC) and Graduate Students Association (GSA) to cultivate culture of integrity and ethical behaviour to promote a positive learning environment. Professor was speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the new student leadership held at the Student Foyer on the 5th November 2024.
He urged the student representatives to uphold the University regulations and policies and to set a positive example for their peers. He encouraged them to strive for a lasting legacy that would serve as a guide for future student leaders.
Professor Tabulawa also advised the student representatives to approach Management without hesitation on matters affecting students. He emphasised that the SRC and GSA played a vital role in representing students and had an important part in the University’s affairs.
Incoming GSA Chairperson, Mr Kesaobaka Metsi, appealed to the University Management that their relations with student’s leadership should be guided by mutual respect. In addition, he appealed to the Management to address students concerns including accommodation and facilities and to be transparent and promote inclusivity.
Meanwhile, the incoming UB SRC President, Mr Topo Kwena, expressed commitment to serving students with dedication to ensure their concerns were addressed effectively. He underscored the SRC’s commitment to upholding the terms of its mandate and delivering quality service. Mr Kwena also appealed to the University to hire more young employees who resonated with the current generation, noting that staff should be relevant, adaptable and open to innovative technologies and ideas.
The newly elected members of the SRC are: Mr Topo Kwena (President), Modiri Motshegwe (Vice President), Obonye Eric Mogapi (Secretary General), One Motsage (Administrative Secretary), Bokamoso Mogorosi (Treasure), Thabo Thanda (Minister of Student Affairs), Laone Vicent Rantshokeng (Minister of Academic Affairs), Katso Sebakile (Minister of Justice), Kaelo Keabetswe (Minister of Information and Propaganda), Terrance Sonny (Minister of Sports), Lesego Ramotlhala (Minister of Entertainment and Culture), Thabo Lechaena (Minister of Bar and Canteen) and Pako Molatole (Minister of Refectory).
GSA comprise the following; Kesa Metsi (Chairperson), Sulay Kamara (Vice Chairperson), Boago Montsiemang (Public Relations Officer), Murphy Tladi (Executive Member - ORI), Kesaobaka Johannes (Welfare Officer), Kemeli Ditswene (Executive Member), Matonkomane Karabo (Secretary General) and Casey Letsholo (Treasure General).
