Newly Coated School of Phamarcy Students Encouraged to Practice Professionalism

CoatFifty-nine University of Botswana School of Pharmacy students have been encouraged to practice professionalism as they embarked on a new journey to become pharmacists. This was highlighted at the Annual School of Pharmacy White Coat Ceremony held at the UB Conference on September 26, 2023.

Speaking at the ceremony, Botswana Health Professionals Council representative, Mr Mmoloki Moloi, explained that professionalism attributes were rarely obtained or learnt from textbooks, tutorials or lectures. Instead, they were obtained and instilled through professional socialisation practices, he said.

“Professionalism in pharmacy necessitates constant attention, leadership, service, orientation, cognitive association with the patient and principled sound decision making,” added Mr Moloi.

Meanwhile the Deputy Vice Chancellor Teaching and Learning, Professor Georges Ekosse when congratulating the new cohort said he was happy to see them fulfil their dreams of becoming pharmacist. He added that pharmacy was a noble profession that cared for humanity and ensured that humankind lived comfortably.

The annual white coat ceremony transitions students into professional pharmaceutical care with the white coat being a symbol of clinical service and care. The students also take a pledge of professionalism, respect, and integrity in pharmaceutical service. The University of Botswana pharmacy programme was established in 2012 in response to a shortage of pharmacists in the country as well as to combat the cost associated with training abroad. There are currently 200 learners enrolled in the programme.
