The Ministry of Environment and Tourism is seeking collaboration with the University of Botswana (UB) on the City Tourism pilot initiative which is set to be launch ed on the 4th of September.
Speaking during a recent engagement with UB’s Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research and Enterprise, Professor Doreen Ramogola-Masire, the Ministry’s Deputy Permanent Secretary, Ms Abigail Khumoyame, outlined plans to reposition Botswana’s urban centres particularly Gaborone, as key tourism destinations.
Ms Khumoyame explained that the initiative formed part of a broader national strategy to diversify the tourism sector and stimulate economic growth. While Botswana is internationally recognised for its wildlife and safari experiences in the Chobe region, the Ministry is now turning its focus to underutilised urban areas in the south.
She further noted that despite being the capital, Gaborone attracted limited tourist activity and short visitor stays which translated into minimal economic benefits for the city. The City Tourism initiative seeks to change that by promoting the cultural, historical and lifestyle assets of urban areas. Opportunities to showcase heritage sites, historical buildings, local cuisine and entertainment were highlighted as potential attractions to make cities more appealing to both international visitors and local residents.
Professor Ramogola-Masire expressed confidence in UB’s ability to contribute meaningfully to the initiative, citing the University’s expertise in research, innovation and community engagement. The Ministry also noted interest in exploring further collaborations with UB to enhance the visibility and accessibility of urban tourism assets, thereby contributing to a more inclusive and diversified tourism sector.
