The University of Botswana (UB) commemorated International Nurses Day on the 8th of May 2026 under the theme, “Our Nurses. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives.” The event brought together nursing students, academic staff, healthcare professionals and invited guests to celebrate the indispensable role of nurses in strengthening healthcare systems and improving community wellbeing.
In his welcome remarks, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Professor Ishmael Kasvosve, praised nurses for their dedication, compassion and unwavering commitment to patient care. Professor Kasvovsee emphasised the critical role they playd in advancing healthcare delivery and encouraged both students and professionals to pursue excellence, leadership and innovation.
University of Botswana Student Nursing Association President, Ms Amantle M. Gabolekwe, underscored the importance of student welfare, mental health and inclusive learning environments. Ms Gabolekwe noted that empowering future nurses required institutions to ensure that students felt supported, heard and equipped to thrive both academically and personally.
Former Director of Nursing and Midwifery Services in the Ministry of Health, Ms Khumo Mosaemang, reminded attendees that nursing had evolved into a dynamic, intellectually demanding and leadership-driven profession while remaining firmly rooted in the preservation of human life and dignity.
Delivering the branch address, Botswana Nurses Union (BONU) President, Mr Oreeditse Kelebakgosi, highlighted the importance of unity, resilience and professionalism within the nursing profession. Mr Kelebakgosi called for continued collaboration among healthcare workers, unions and stakeholders to improve working conditions and patient care.
The celebration also featured an awards ceremony recognising outstanding student nurses. Sharon Luza was named Student Nurse of the Year while Amantle Gabolekwe received the Leadership and Excellence Award. Shantan Keletso Tlalaetsile was honoured as the Most Promising Student Nurse.
Academic Excellence Awards were presented to Lenny Kabalano (Level 300) and Katlego Botsheloeng (Level 400) while Ditshupo Matabele received the Quiz Leader Award.
In her closing remarks, Professor Wananani Tshiamo thanked all participants and organisers for making the event a success. She encouraged students and professionals to continue serving with compassion, integrity and excellence.
