Deputy Vice Chancellor Teaching and Learning, Professor Richard Tabulawa, has described the Chinese Bridge competence show as highly critical in building a communication bridge between Chinese and Botswana primary school students.
Professor Tabulawa made remarks during a “Chinese Bridge” show for Botswana primary school students held on the 6th June 2025 at UB Theatre Hall. The purpose of the Chinese show was to create a platform for Botswana primary school students to showcase their Chinese language skills and talent.
Professor Tabulawa stated that learning the Chinese language was a valuable asset for Botswana’s children as it equips them to engage effectively in future business opportunities involving China. He added that UB was in the process of establishing a fulltime Bachelor’s Degree programme in Chinese Language which would focus on Chinese language teaching and learning, teach students Chinese language skills as well as train students on how to use the Chinese language properly in daily communication and future work.
He further noted that the programme would also focus on developing students to become capable public speakers as well as translators of Chinese language.
Chinese Embassy in Botswana Counsellor, Ms CUI Yin, said studying Chinese language offered numerous advantages including enhancing cognitive function, broadening career prospects, facilitating travel and deepening cultural understanding.
She said studying Chinese also unlocked access to a vast market and could boost international business opportunities.
Meanwhile, Pre and Primary Ministry of Basic Education Principal Education Officer, Ms Pansy Mphinyane, highlighted that language proficiency was attainment of skills and passion for cultural exchange. She noted that cultural exchange between nations would go far as strengthening global bond, friendship and tolerance.
