Botswana has Opportunity to Export Mining Expertise to the International Stage – Prof Norris

MiningUniversity of Botswana (UB) Vice Chancellor, Professor David Norris, has said Botswana was well-positioned to export its mining expertise to the global arena, thanks to the internationally recognised mining degree programme offered by the University of Botswana.

Speaking during a panel discussion at the Future of Mining Summit, held at Boipuso Hall on the 17th of June 2025 under the theme “Exporting Talent and Mining Expertise: Botswana’s Role in Shaping Future Skills, Innovation and Industry Evolution”, Professor Norris underscored the strategic importance of the mining sector to the country's economy. He noted that mining remained a significant contributor to Botswana's gross domestic product (GDP), foreign exchange earnings and government revenue while also providing vital employment opportunities for Batswana.

Professor Norris highlighted that the University of Botswana had established robust frameworks to produce graduates who were responsive to evolving processes and trends in the mining sector. He reiterated that such frameworks included active partnerships with government and industry to ensure that academic programmes remained relevant and forward-looking.

He further explained that UB’s mining degree programmes were regularly revised and guided by advisory boards comprising representatives from the Chamber of Mines and major mining houses. That ensured that the curriculum was not only aligned with national needs but also met international standards and accreditation bodies, thus preparing graduates for the global market.

Meanwhile, Planning Superintendent at Kenmare Mines in Mozambique, Ms Khumo Nyenyiwa, underscored the importance of collaboration between African countries in the mining sector. She noted that such partnerships were essential Miningfor sharing knowledge, skills and training opportunities. Ms Nyenyiwa commended Botswana’s reputation for good governance and a strong mining foundation, asserting that the internationally recognised mining programme at UB gave the country a competitive edge to export talent across the globe.

Also contributing to the discussion was Dr Kgosietsile Kolobe, a Senior Mining Engineer at Henderson Mine (Freeport-McMoRan) in the United States. Dr Kolobe highlighted the potential of foreign mining professionals to play a transformative role in Botswana’s mining industry. He emphasised the importance of mentoring, coaching and collaborating with local institutions to enhance training programmes and ensure alignment with current industry demands. Such partnerships, he noted, were critical in producing graduates who were market-ready and equipped to lead the future of mining in Botswana and beyond.
