Culture, Sports and Recreation

The University of Botswana has a tradition of supporting staff and students of all ages and abilities in their pursuit of active, vibrant experiences through culture, sports and recreation. Our state of the art indoor and outdoor on-campus facilities are amongst the best in the region. Facilities include an 8000-seater stadium with an IAAF accredited track, a climate controlled 5000 seater multipurpose indoor sports arena with a modern digital real-time scoreboard, an Olympic size swimming pool, an entertainment arena which accommodates 1500 spectators and outdoor courts for tennis, volleyball, basketball, field hockey, and handball. 

Programs and services range from class instruction in aquatics, aerobics, martial arts, strength training, cardio, human performance, rehabilitation and cultural activities. All these services are supported by our passionate and committed professionals at the department of Culture, Sports and Recreation who are accredited by international regulatory bodies such as FIFA, IAAF, and ASCA. Our renowned social and cultural activities provide our students with opportunities for regional and international cultural exchange and artistic expression.

Our award-winning sports teams participate in national and international competitions.  UB Rhinos Rugby Club, UB Giants Softball Club, UB Kicks ladies’ soccer, UB Flying Hawks Netball club, and UB Relics Basketball Club play in their respective elite national leagues.

Facility rental

The Department of Culture, Sports and Recreation has various facilities available for rental to both UB community and public. They include

  • The Stadium
  • The Aquatic Centre
  • Softball diamond
  • Outdoor courts (netball, tennis, volleyball, basketball, handball)
  • Open arena/amphitheater
  • Campus Indoor Sports Center

Equipment loans

Our equipment is loaned to the UB community. We have equipment cutting across various types of sports.

Coaching

Our department offers coaching to student clubs for free in the respective sporting codes.

  • Volunteers are welcome to join the staff.
  • We have part time (paid employees) coaches to assist resident coaches.
  • Our Sport Officers can also run courses for the UB Community and national teams.
  • Mentoring

Workshops and seminars

  • Our department hosts workshops and seminars to support various courses. We also give different talks to the UB community, schools, private institutions and public that cover

    • Motivation
    • Culture
    • Visual and performing arts
  • UB community members may request for a seminar or collaborative workshop.
  • Some seminars run according to a year schedule.
  • They are free of charge.

Volunteer

We have various opportunities for volunteers for all sporting codes, arts and culture, and other services offered.  Our volunteer opportunities range from:

  • Student volunteers across all aspects, including administration, medical, and sporting officiation

  • Choir conductors
  • Sports scientists e.g. sports psychologists, exercise physiologist, etc.
