The University of Botswana (UB), a premier state-owned tertiary institution dedicated to shaping the future through excellence, research, innovation and meaningful societal impact, invites applications from accomplished and suitably qualified professionals for the position of Senior Psychologist in the Department of Student Life and Experience.
The Senior Psychologist provides advanced psychological services to students, addressing their mental health needs. The incumbent conducts individual and group therapy sessions, developing treatment plans and collaborating with other mental health professionals to ensure comprehensive support.
Duties: The successful candidate will be expected to;
Psychological Services: (i) Provide psychological services, assessments, and treatment plans for students facing personal, emotional, academic, or interpersonal challenges (ii) Conduct assessments and provide treatment programmes/ plans to address student challenges or difficulties. (iii) Provide resources that are helpful to students in their social, psychological and emotional adjustment. (iv) Liaise with faculties and University staff to address issues of mental health in the university. (v) Make appropriate referrals to specialized services or outside resources. (vi) Maintain accurate and confidential records of sessions and interventions provided (vii) Provide crisis intervention to students who are going through mental health issues or traumatic experiences.
Rehabilitation Support: (i) Assess student needs and design rehabilitative support programs. (ii) Provide individual and group counselling for students with emotional and physical impairments to facilitate coping strategies. (iii) Develop tailored academic, psychological, and social support plans with stakeholders. (iv) Train students and guardians on self-management techniques.
Mental Health Education and Engagement: (i) Design and implement mental health awareness and education programmes. (ii) Organize seminars and outreach initiatives on mental health to improve mental wellbeing and reduce stigma. (iii) Participate in mental health activities and initiatives to raise awareness. (iv) Provide consultative services within the university, community agencies, social services agencies, rehabilitation programs and health maintenance organizations.
Qualification Requirements: Applicants should have (i) A Masters’ degree in Psychology, Rehabilitation Psychology or related qualifications is required. (ii) Professional license, in good standing, with Botswana Health Professions Council (BHPC) or eligibility to register is required.
Professional Registration: Being licensed, and in good standing, with Botswana Health Professions Council (BHPC) or eligibility to register is required.
Work Experience: A minimum of four (4) years of experience, three (3) of which should have been at the officer level. Higher education experience will be an added advantage.
Other Requirements: i. Strong clinical skills, including psychological assessments and diagnosis. ii. Knowledge of rehabilitation psychology principles. iii. Excellent in communication, interpersonal and crisis intervention skills.
